I don’t run…

Happy Wednesday (almost Thursday but the time I get this posted…)! Most of you know that I do a little (itty bitty teeny weeny) bit of customer work. A few years ago I was up to my eyeballs in customer work. I lived off of Starbucks (well, that hasn’t changed) and would sometimes stay up to all hours of the night doing embroidery (on the dining room table). Jeff used to have to grab my shoulders and shake me, hide bags of work from me, etc. in order to avert a potential nervous breakdown. When we sold our house and moved I had a great excuse to slow down, and have tried to keep a slow pace ever since. I just don’t have time to do a whole lot. BUT… every now & then I get an order and LOVE the outcome, so it keeps me inspired to continue to do a little customer work. I also think it’s good for me to stay in touch with our Applique Cafe customers, since most of them are also doing customer work! I can relate!!

Typically my customers bring “stuff” to me to do (dresses, shirts, etc.). This customer made a trip to Belk b/c this was all J. Khaki brand and all super cute! She wanted Owl 4 or 5 on this dress, and while the colors scared me (how was I going to find anything to match these colors??) it ALL came together! First I found the lime & turquoise dot fabric which looks like it was made to match this dress. The wings fabric also matched great and I tied in the orange with the feet, beak and flower. I was pleased with how this turned out! Dress – click HERE! This is our Owl 5.

Don’t all rush out to Belk at once!

Belk also has some super cute ruffle bottom blank shirts. Here I did the Flower Peace Sign. My customer also left pants for me to match. I’ve always loved orange, hot pink and turquoise together!

Basically I picked the colors out that would work (from the pants) and then went with polka dots since they “go” with most anything, including these stripes and florals. Patterns go with stripes, but if you try to mix different patterns together it sometimes can be too busy. Polka dots are safe with patterns and stripes! Groovy little outfit! Isn’t the shirt cute? It does come to a slight “V” in the front (bottom).

I also did this shirt for Christmas on the same white ruffle J. Khaki tee. This is our JOY design. Kind of makes me ready for Christmas DESIGNS!! I said DESIGNS, not Christmas-Christmas.

Lastly I did our Pumpkin 6 to match a Kelly’s Kids lime tulle skirt. This is Monogram Wizard Plus “Master Circle” font. If you have MWP and do not have this font, get it.

Now to the “I don’t run” part. Saturday was the 2nd annual Virginia’s Run 5K and 1 mile fun run event. This event is put on by our school, and is a race to honor the memory of Virginia Jacks. She was a 17 year old student (and also a member of our church) who was killed in a car accident leaving an Auburn game 2 years ago. I did not know Virginia at the time, but have learned so much about her in the past 2 years and also spent some time this summer doing a bible study with her parents. She was such a unique and special young lady who loved the Lord! I think it’s wonderful to honor her in this way and I think it’s so important for my children to participate in this race.

Most of you know that Applique Cafe has an applique design from some of Virginia’s original artwork ~ Virginia’s Cross. All proceeds from the sale of this design go to Virginia’s Run, as Applique Cafe has been a sponsor both years of the race. Here’s the Gulledge fam before the 1 mile fun run. Jeff ran the 5K and then we all did the fun run together, or should I say they ran and Mallory & I ran/walked. I hate to exercise! I’m approaching 40 and really really really NEED to exercise more, but basically I’m not a huge fan. Someone told me Saturday that I “looked” like I was a runner. I guess it was the new tennis shoes and outfit I had on? I fooled them! I. don’t. run. Jeff, on the other hand, usually runs at least 3 miles a day.

This year we sponsored the race day registration as well as pre-race nourishment.

This was a shot at the post-race awards ceremony. Hundreds of people were there! What a fabulous way to remember Virginia! One of the many reasons why I love our school!!

Mal got her face painted and she’s sporting a t-shirt her mama made her the night before. It’s Virginia’s Cross on our Circle Patch (5×7 patch and 4×4 cross). This was a Target Circo t-shirt that had the cute little pocket on the front. I’ve always been told HOW EASY it is to remove a pocket, so I thought I’d give it a try. Short sleeve tees are hard to come by this time of year. I did manage 1 hole in the shirt and tried to cover it with the patch, but no such luck. I glued it with fabric glue and it’s hardly noticeable with the stabilizer and comfort cover on the back! It’s at about 2:00 on the shirt right on the edge of the patch.

It was a great day and I got a little exercise. For realz, I am turning 40 next weekend and something is going to have to give! Everyone is now WAY younger than me and I’ve got to make a move. Maybe with the cooler weather I can at least get out and walk?

I hope everyone has a great week/weekend! I listed 5 new designs at AC yesterday and we have more new ones coming out soon ~ lots on our Christmas list!

Friday Fabric

Happy Friday! I have been meaning to do a post on all the new fabulous fabrics I’ve gotten recently. Here it is! I posted this photo already on Facebook. The dot fabrics below are all from TJs Fabric (Opp, AL). Most of these are Michael Miller “Kiss Dots” and I think the brown and red are “Dumb Dots”. If you go to TJ’s website and click on Online Store, then Newest Editions, you’ll find most of these. I LOVE any and all polka dot fabrics and use them in almost all of my designs, especially the girly ones! I used the hot pink in our latest Owl 5 (MUST SEE) design listed this morning.

These are Robert Kaufman fabrics. LOVE LOVE LOVE the Chevrons which are SO popular right now! Top row 4th over Chevron is the one I used last year in our Turkey 4 design! Again, all from TJs and these can be found under Newest Additions as well!

More Robert Kaufman (Jingle Holly). Top left dot is Michael Miller (Santa Play Dot) which has been very popular over the past couple of years!

These top swirly fabrics are Riley Blake ~ great for fall! Bottom middle dots are Moda as well as the right plaid. Bottom left dot is Riley Blake ~ super cute colors! Again, all TJs and all should be listed under Newest Editions!

CHEVRONS!!!!!!!!!! They are THE hot fabric right now! Hot pink and green I’ve had for a while (I think I got them at InTown Quilters in Decatur, GA) and are Michael Miller. The Brown, aqua, yellow are all Riley Blake. You can find Chevrons at both TJs Fabric and Whimsical Designs. You can get 5% off at Whimsical Designs with my special code: ACe6ecea7394 through September 30th! The discount can be stacked on other sales too!

These Chevrons are smaller than the above ~ all Riley Blake! I don’t know if we can all thank Isaac Mizrahi (2011 Target craze) for the chevron phase or what? Thank you whoever! I love them! I used the black on our new Bat design and the red on our new Pirate Skeleton design, both listed today!

These are Robert Kaufman (says Ann Kelle for Robert Kaufman). LOVE these!!

Again, check out TJs Fabric or Whimsical Designs for these great fabrics for FALL and CHRISTMAS! Really makes me want to start on Christmas designs!

Have a great weekend! I have been working all week on a large baby order (be on the lookout for my next post) and sampled 5 new Applique Cafe designs yesterday and this morning. I just turned my machine OFF and am going to try to leave it off all weekend! It’s time for consigning the kids clothes (NEXT WEEK) and I haven’t even started…..

Summertime 2012

I’m sad to report that summer is almost halfway over. Well, I guess we have a little over a month until we’ll be back to the grind. Homework, schedules, carpool, etc begin again for us on August 15th. In the past I’ve had at least 1 if not 2 of my kids in summer school and this time last year we were about to move. This year, no summer school (which has been a lot of fun). A year later in our house, I have so so so so much to do! So much to do that I wake up every day overwhelmed and don’t do anything. That’s the story of my life and I’m sure there is a named condition for it. Anyway… we are enjoying our summer and have spent a lot of time this week at the pool (because it is too hot to do anything else).

Here is a cute beach towel and tote combo I picked up at Target yesterday for one of Mallory’s friend’s birthday party tomorrow. I love the colors! The font I used is “Kim Single” (as opposed to Kim Multi) in Monogram Wizard Plus.

We spent last week down at the beach with my family (12 of us total). This was our 7th year (Browder was 2 when we started) and this year we ventured down 30-A closer to Alys Beach, Seacrest Beach and Rosemary Beach. Our first 6 years we stayed in Seagrove. It was FABULOUS! Seagrove is fabulous too, but we loved our new house so much my mom rented it already for next year! We took our bikes and rode down to those “beaches” for a concert, ice cream and treats in the afternoon and to go eat. We hit La Cocina TWICE (I highly recommend the crab nachos which were recommended to us)! I absolutely love 30A!! Here are several pics of the kiddos…

I think this was the first day or two on the beach. These 2 are 21 months apart.

My handsome 9 year old! Browder was 2 when we started this family beach trip tradition!! Yes, his eyes are that dark.

Here are all 3 kids working hard on a sand castle.

That’s Browder and his cousin Lucas in the background. They rode tubes down the beach 128 times a day.

Our house had a great pool.

You all remember how much fun you can have with 5 tubes!

I threw some clothes on the kids one afternoon and ordered them down on the beach for a very fast impromptu photo session as the sun was literally going down. That usually works best versus a planned out we-are-going-to-take-pictures-on-this-night kind of thing. Today I ordered 16×20 canvases from Cafepress (use promo code FBCANVAS for a great deal through June 30). These are the photos I used and hopefully they will all “go” together!

This cute little crooked smile is sooooo “G”!!!!

I had a couple of other great closeup pics of Mallory but ordered this one since it matched the others. Here cute outfit is from Stitched & Smocked!

Lastly, this was the most fabulous porch swing I have ever seen! It had about 6 pillows across the back (which were probably inside due to rain) and I spent several early mornings laying on it reading before the kids got up! If I had the same beach breeze with the ocean sound in the background at my house, this would be there too!

I hope you all are having a great summer too! I have to say I have really enjoyed not working so much and am rather enjoying my kids instead! Sissy is learning to swim and the boys are doing tennis clinics and yesterday we had a “watermelon party” with several of the neighborhood kids. That’s what summer is all about!

We are working on FALL designs at Applique Cafe and our patriotic designs are currently on sale. We added 3 new ones today as well, so if you like football, golf or trains carrying apples, check them out! Have a great weekend and Happy 4th of JULY!
