Wasted Fabric (insert sad face)

I monogrammed these kitchen items this week and I thought they turned out neat! I can’t say that I’ve ever monogrammed an oven mitt before, but thanks to my fast frames I was able to add a little somthin-somthin to these otherwise khaki everyday pot holders (from Target)! I like the deep dark brown on the khaki – very Tuscan!

This week we had the pleasure of taking care of G’s class pet, Chester! I have to say it was actually fun keeping up with Chester and taking pictures of what we did. Jeff & I got a kick out of the fact that Chester spent the weekend in Mobile at Mardi Gras (with a classmate), then in this picture Monday night we are heading to church to our annual Missions Conference. From Mardi Gras to church is a little funny!? Eh? As you can see he is strapped in with “Bear”, another family animal. Seatbelt safety is key!

Chester learned about the upcoming mission trip to the Amazon!

Yesterday Chester went with us to take B to school, then to Chick Fil A and to see Dr. G for M’s 3 year checkup! Chester went back to school today but we got to journal about our time together. Mallory woke up a little sick today so I blame the CFA playground! Of course she could have gotten a bug at church, school, the Dr. office, Publix or any other number of places! She stayed home from school today and had a good nap and appears fine, but our morning was a little rough!

Now to the title of my post… am I the only one that totally wastes fabric every time I do an applique? BTW this is Riley Blake Quite Contrary fabric (love)! This is the AC Mermaid design.

So I trim around the “tail” of the mermaid and look at all the fabric I have left! Total waste of my favorite fabric! It has HNBL on it so I’m not sure if I can save it, but may keep it laying around in case I need it!

I’m working on some “work” today for the first time in about a week (other than the pot holders). I feel so distracted lately and it’s hard to get anything done! I spent the morning washing clothes and cleaning up the house. Plus, it was raining and storming so I was afraid to turn my machine on. Next week is Spring Break and the boys are in art camp 3 (half) days, so hopefully I can hunker down and get my work done! It has piled up on me and I have a couple more “jobs” coming in. That may be all I can do for a while. As it gets closer to the end of school the less time I will have! As I type this the phone just rang about another job. One more!! OK that may be it for a while! 🙂

Comments

  1. Glad to know that I’m not the only one that wastes fabric. I have started to try and measure before hand to help prevent this. However, sometimes I get in a hurry and just cut.

  2. I need some advice 🙂

I am pretty new to embroidery and still figuring things out. When I embroider lighter weight fabrics (cottons, and t shirts) I am still getting some slight puckering. The puckering is more prevalent on names and letters and hardly ever on applique designs. Is this due to stabilizer?

    Thanks 🙂

    • What kind of stabilizer are you using? Have you seen my Hooping 101 post? I use medium cutaway!

      • I used a medium cutaway last night for my 2nd project and it worked better. There was still some slight puckering but not as much. I am hoping that the more I do, the better they will become! 🙂

Thanks so much – love the blog and your stuff 🙂

  3. I don’t consider it a waste. I have “scrap” bag, all have HBL on it. I have found just the right piece out of my scrap bag. In my tiny little mind I consider that my scraps keep me from wasting more fabric.

    • That is a GREAT idea!

    • I do the same thing! I have a little canvas bin and I put all of my HNBL scraps in there and dig through them when I’m doing another shirt. I can almost always find what I need in there for a small part of the applique!

    • Emily Taylor says

I have a “scrape” box too! At first, it was just a small pile on my work table, then it go out of hand and had to be contained. It is my go-to box for the small parts of a designs, I can almost always find what I need in there and not have to iron more HNBL on more fabric than necessary.

    • Me too! Mine’s a scrap drawer! No way am I throwing away perfectly good HNBL’ed scrap fabric when it can be used on another project!!!! 🙂

  4. Question…..I just ordered some Comfort Cover to put on the back of my grandkids appliqued t-shirts to keep them feeling “soft”. How do you apply it? I bought mine from SewingMachine.com…..is it supposed to have a sticky side for you to iron on to the back of your appilque? I know you mentioned this in a blog but I could not find that posting……..thanks!

    • I use Comfort Cover, too. You iron it on. One side feels a lot softer than the other side…kinda silky. Put that side on their skin and the rougher side down on the shirt. Someone suggested to me to use the silk setting and spot iron because the stuff will “melt” if it’s too hot? I have trouble with mine coming off after one or two washes, though.

  5. I am such a miser – well hoarder is more like it; I hate to part with my beautiful fabric! I have to print templates of my sew-outs anyway, so I always measure how big of a piece I need. Then I cut the HBL, iron it on the fabric and then cut that out. I am not wasting fabric, but the time I am spending might be more valuable than the fabric I am saving : ). I save all my scraps too because so many appliques have little bitty pieces. This makes me think – maybe you could write a post about things you do that save time. I know I could use some tips there!

  6. I would love to know where you got the mermaid design…I Love it!

  7. Love the idea for pot holders and mit! I have a house warming party and need to take a gift! Thanks for the idea!
I have a scrap bucked full of sizeable scraps with HNB Lite on them. I almost always find black scraps for tires on trucks!

  8. Amy Brewer says

I keep all of my scraps in two old wipes containters, works perfectly. I often find pieces I can use.

  9. We have that same dress Mallory has on…..but I bet you were a better mom and put her mono or name on it….I never got around to it…oh well at least little sis can wear later!

  10. So how do you get an oven mitt in the machine to embroider on it? I would like to do small items on my bernina but don’t know how to get them in the machine.

  11. Natalie Leary says

Do you sell these? I would love to order some from you for Christmas.

  12. On the pot holders, does the stitching show or did you take apart or cover with coordinating fabric? Love the colors you choose.

  13. While embroidering the pot holders does the stabilizer show on the back? What stabilizer do you use for them? I was thinking fusible but I still don’t really want the design to show through on the other side.
